A strategic collaboration was established to help ASCs avoid wrong-site surgery and cut expenses.
FREMONT, CA: MedMal Direct Insurance Company, a multi-state medical professional liability insurance company, and StartBox, LLC established their agreement today. The collaboration will give medical professional liability risk management discounts to healthcare providers and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) in exchange for using the StartBox System.
Wrong-site surgery (WSS) refers to procedures performed on the wrong patient or operations performed in the wrong place or side. Despite establishing guidelines and checklists to decrease its incidence, WSS occurs more than 50 times every week in the United States. WSS has a tragic effect on the patient, nursing staff, surgeon, and facility involved.
Through a systems-based approach, the StartBox System got created to capture near misses and prevent WSS. As a result, it increases communication along the patient care continuum. In addition, it allows an organization to analyze errors and assess the performance of complex safety policies without ever having to deal with a disaster.
